A programme of The Schaffa Foundation

A hot meal keeps someone going. A toolbox gets them back.

We fund the exact thing standing between someone and a stable life — a trade toolkit, mobility equipment, a bond on a first flat, course fees. You cover one item. We buy it from the supplier and show you the receipt.

Open boards

The gap

Being fed is not the same as being back on your feet.

Every Sunday our volunteers meet people whose real barrier is not effort or ability. It is one specific, priceable thing standing in the way.

Sometimes that is a trade toolkit. Just as often it is a wheelchair, a bond on a first flat, or the fee for a course already half-planned. Different people, the same shape of problem: close that one gap and their own effort does the rest.

What we fund

Four kinds of gap, one way of closing them

Work

A trade back in reach

Tools, steel-caps, a white card, a way to get to the job. The gear a real trade needs to start again.

Health

The equipment that changes everything

A wheelchair, hearing aids, glasses, a mobility aid. Things that are unremarkable to have and life-changing to lack.

Housing

The bond that ends a wait

A bond, first month’s rent, storage for belongings, ID documents. The paperwork and deposits that stand between someone and a lease.

Education

A qualification within reach

Course fees, a laptop, textbooks, an enrolment already half-finished. The last piece of a plan someone had already made.

How it works

Four steps you can check yourself

Referred, then verified

From the Street Buffet table or a caseworker. We confirm what is needed and a realistic outcome — back to work, into stable housing, a health need addressed.

We price the exact gap

Not a lump sum — a list. Every line quoted by a named supplier. The total is just the list added up.

You cover one item

Pick the thing you want to buy. The tile fills in on the board and stays filled for everyone watching.

We pay the supplier direct

Never the participant, never cash. We buy it and publish the receipt on the set page.

Where the money goes

Most giving asks you to trust an outcome. This asks you to check a docket.

A set has no target we invented. The target is the sum of the quoted items, so it cannot drift from what is actually being bought. If an item comes in cheaper, the set gets cheaper.

Safeguards

Six checks before a set can take a dollar

Enforced by the system, not by good intentions. Until all six are ticked, the page cannot accept a donation.

  • Referred through a service Not self-nomination alone.
  • Circumstances confirmed The need is real and current.
  • Every item quoted By the named supplier, in writing.
  • Participant agreement signed They can stop at any time.
  • Media consent signed No photo or story without it.
  • A realistic outcome identified Work, housing, health or education — a named avenue, not a hope.

Where we came from

Ten years of Sundays got us here.

The Schaffa Foundation started with one man, a folding table and a bag of unwanted clothes. It became Street Buffet: hot meals every Sunday at Tom Uren Square, Woolloomooloo.

Street Buffet always said the aim was a genuine stepping stone. Street Set is that stepping stone, built and costed.

Someone is one gap away from a stable life.

Our first sets open once participant agreements and supplier quotes are in place — a trade, a health need, a bond, a course. Be part of that beginning.
